Invariant Set Theory: Violating Measurement Independence without Fine Tuning, Conspiracy, Constraints on Free Will or Retrocausality

چکیده

Invariant Set (IS) theory is a locally causal ontic theory of physics based on the Cosmological Invariant Set postulate that the universe U can be considered a deterministic dynamical system evolving precisely on a (suitably constructed) fractal dynamically invariant set in U’s state space. IS theory violates the Bell inequalities by violating Measurement Independence. Despite this, IS theory is not fine tuned, is not conspiratorial, does not constrain experimenter free will and does not invoke retrocausality. The reasons behind these claims are discussed in this paper. These arise from properties not found in conventional ontic models: the invariant set has zero measure in its Euclidean embedding space, has Cantor Set structure homeomorphic to the p-adic integers (p≫ 0) and is non-computable. In particular, it is shown that the p-adic metric encapulates the physics of the Cosmological Invariant Set postulate, and provides the technical means to demonstrate no fine tuning or conspiracy. Quantum theory can be viewed as the singular limit of IS theory when when p is set equal to infinity. Since it is based around a top-down constraint from cosmology, IS theory suggests that gravitational and quantum physics will be unified by a gravitational theory of the quantum, rather than a quantum theory of gravity. Some implications arising from such a perspective are discussed.

Bell's conspiracy, Schrödinger's black cat and global invariant sets.

A locally causal hidden-variable theory of quantum physics need not be constrained by the Bell inequalities if this theory also partially violates the measurement independence condition. However, such violation can appear unphysical, implying implausible conspiratorial correlations between the hidden variables of particles being measured and earlier determinants of instrumental settings. A nove...

Nonlocality without nonlocality∗

Bell’s theorem is purported to demonstrate the impossibility of a nonlocal “hidden variable” theory underpinning quantum mechanics. It relies on the well-known assumption of ‘locality’, and also on a little-examined assumption called ‘statistical independence’ (SI). Violations of this assumption have variously been thought to suggest “backward causation”, a “conspiracy” on the part of nature, o...

Flavor Constraints on Theory Space

Composite Higgs models based on the chiral symmetries of " theory space " can produce Higgs bosons with masses of order 100 GeV from underlying strong dynamics at scales up to 10 TeV without fine tuning. This talk argues that flavor-violating interactions generically arising from underlying flavor dynamics constrain the Higgs compositeness scale to be > ∼75 GeV, implying that significant fine-t...

Physics Without Causality - Theory and Evidence

The principle of cause and effect is deeply rooted in human experience, so much so that it is routinely and tacitly assumed throughout science, even by scientists working in areas where time symmetry is theoretically ingrained, as it is in both classical and quantum physics. Experiments are said to cause their results, not the other way around. In this informal paper, we argue that this assumpt...

Parity invariant lattice regularization of three - dimensional gauge - fermion system

In three dimensions, the effective action for the gauge field induced by integrating out a massless Dirac fermion is known to give either a parity-invariant or a parity-violating result, depending on the regularization scheme. We construct a lattice formulation of the massless Dirac fermion using the overlap formalism. We show that the result is parity invariant in contrast to the formulation u...
